Himeji unveils toilet trailers to address shortage during disasters

From July 3 to August 30, 2026, on selected dates, the Ibukiyama Driveway in Gifu Prefecture will operate night hours. Temperatures at the summit can be 10°C lower than at the base. Overnight stays in motorhomes (車中泊) are permitted.

The Suzuka Kenko no Mori RV Resort in Suzuka, Nagano Prefecture, has reopened with 25 travel trailers. Each 37 sq m unit includes an induction stove, bathroom, and toilet. The site features a 12,000-liter water tank and portable batteries, enabling 10 households to live normally for a week during water or power outages. Operator Cumberland Japan aims to deploy the trailers as emergency housing after earthquakes and floods, and has been selected for a Ukraine reconstruction project to send trailers there by February 2027.

The program includes a campfire lecture by master Masaya Ino, a guided climb of Mount Amakazari, a woodworking workshop, and bingo. The site also serves as a local emergency response hub.
