Spain's Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) has published instruction PROT 2026/04, clarifying the rules for overnight stays in motorhomes on Canary Islands beaches. According to the document, sleeping inside a parked motorhome is permitted as long as no elements extend beyond its perimeter. Fines for illegal beach parking range from €50 to €150, while camping fines start at €40 per square meter per day.
The instruction also incorporates a Supreme Court ruling from March 18, 2018, recognizing municipalities' right to regulate camping sites and long-term parking of such vehicles. It repeals previous restrictions based on weight and dimensions, requiring instead that motorhomes be assessed by their use and impact on neighbors. Thus, municipalities will gain the authority to regulate parking and camping.
