Spain's General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has published instruction PROT 2026/04, clarifying the frequency of technical inspections (ITV) for vans converted into campers. According to the document, if the vehicle registration lists category N (goods vehicle), after 10 years of use the inspection must be passed every six months. For motorhomes in category M (passenger vehicle), the annual inspection after 10 years remains.
The instruction specifies that inspection frequency depends on the category shown in the technical card, per Royal Decree 920/2017. It also distinguishes between 'parking' and 'camping': a motorhome is considered parked if awnings, stabilizers, and other protruding elements are not deployed.
Sources report fines for lacking a valid ITV range from 200 euros (100 euros if paid early) to 500 euros, with possible vehicle immobilization. No transition period is provided; the rule took effect on June 20, 2026.
