In Brief

Spain's Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) has issued instruction PROT 2026/04, setting different ITV intervals for motorhomes and campers, clarifying parking rules, and introducing a new road sign S-128 for waste disposal points.

Spain's Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) has issued a new instruction PROT 2026/04, updating technical inspection (ITV) and parking rules for motorhomes and campers.

New ITV intervals

Inspection frequency depends on vehicle category:

  • Motorhomes (category M, passenger): exempt until 4 years, then every 2 years from 4 to 10 years, annually after 10 years.
  • Campers (category N, goods): annually until 10 years, then every 6 months after 10 years.

Factory-built models like VW California are classified as motorhomes, while converted vans are campers.

Parking and new sign

Parking motorhomes is allowed without deploying external elements or discharging fluids — this is considered regular parking. The concepts of parking and camping are distinguished. Municipalities may restrict parking duration and prohibit overnight stays, based on a 2018 Supreme Court ruling. A new road sign S-128 indicates waste disposal points.

German Federal Fiscal Court: Luxury motorhome sales can be tax-exempt

Germany's highest fiscal court has ruled that the short-term resale of expensive motorhomes is not necessarily subject to speculation tax.
