In Brief

Demand for used camper vans has fallen sharply, especially in the under €25,000 segment. Sellers are forced to lower prices, while buyers have more room to negotiate.

The second-hand camper van market is experiencing a sharp drop in demand amid rising supply, particularly in the segment under €25,000. According to OSW, a platform for private vehicle sales, demand has decreased compared to last year.

The main reasons are higher road tax and fuel prices, which make owning a camper van less attractive. Renaldo Molenbeek, co-founder of OSW, said: "The benefits of traveling with a camper van currently do not outweigh the higher costs for many consumers." In several European countries, fuel prices exceed €2 per liter.

Sellers are forced to make concessions, while buyers have more room to negotiate. Supply remains stable. Unlike the used car sector, sales of new camper vans in the Netherlands have grown: 2,941 units were delivered in 2025 (+19% compared to 2024), and 1,297 new camper vans were registered in the first four months of 2026 (+9% compared to the same period last year).

Doubling of road tax fails to deter motorhome buyers in the Netherlands

Since the start of 2024, the annual road tax for motorhome owners in the Netherlands has increased from an average of 900 to about 1800 euros. Despite this, exhibitors and visitors at a trade show in Den Bosch reported that the tax hike has not dampened sales. The number of motorhomes in the country has doubled over ten years to 200,000 units.

Brakel expands motorhome parking but introduces fees

The Belgian municipality of Brakel is reforming the popular motorhome parking area at the De Rijdtmeersen recreation site. The number of spaces will increase from four to twelve, but they will no longer be free. The change is driven by frequent occupation of regular visitor parking by motorhomes, which has drawn criticism. The new site will have a barrier, digital booking and payment via QR code, and free electricity will be discontinued. Construction is expected to start in spring 2027.

Brakel introduces paid parking for motorhomes at De Rijdt recreation area

The Belgian municipality of Brakel will replace free motorhome parking with paid spaces at the De Rijdt recreation site starting next year. The decision follows complaints that motorhome owners often park on free spots meant for regular cars. The new lot will feature a barrier, 12 designated motorhome spaces, and free parking for cars. Stricter enforcement against illegal parking is also planned.

Belgian motorhome market: how to choose between a camper van and a motorhome

Motorhome sales in Belgium have grown by 40% over seven years, reaching 5,000 units last year. The country ranks third in Europe for motorhome density per capita. The average buyer age has dropped from 59 to 55. Key selection criteria: trip type (short or long), passenger count, budget, and payload capacity (up to 3.5 tonnes with a standard driving license). Experts recommend renting different models before purchasing.
