A serious multi-vehicle collision occurred on Saturday evening on the A9 motorway in the German state of Thuringia. According to police, the driver of a campervan, who was transporting two children, did not notice a traffic jam and crashed into several vehicles at high speed.
Nine vehicles were damaged in the chain-reaction crash, including two minibuses carrying 11 children with special needs and eight carers. A total of 34 people were injured, among them several children; all sustained minor to moderate injuries and none are life-threatening. The traffic jam was caused by an earlier accident involving a horse trailer that had overturned.
Damage is estimated at 350,000 euros. The motorway towards Berlin was closed for approximately five and a half hours.
