Owners of camper vans and motorhomes have been emptying wastewater into highway drains along the Yorkshire Coast, prompting concerns about the impact on bathing waters. Scarborough councillor Subash Sharma reported seeing vehicles parked over street grates to release their waste and asked Yorkshire Water to intervene. The utility company agreed to engage with camping and caravan clubs to improve awareness and is considering signs warning that some drains lead directly to the sea. The issue has also been identified in other seaside towns, including Bognor. Yorkshire Water is running a pilot scheme to relaunch the national Yellow Fish programme, which marks surface water drains to remind people that waste entering them goes untreated into watercourses.
