On the afternoon of 15 May 2026, a campervan (caravan) veered off the road and overturned at the 160th km of the Ionia Odos highway, towards Ioannina, near the Ammotopos exit. Inside was a family of French nationals: two adults and two minor children. Some sources give the children's ages as 8 months and 3 years; others do not specify.
Three fire engines and seven firefighters from the Filippiada fire service arrived at the scene. Using special equipment, they freed all four victims. The injured were handed over to ambulance crews and taken to Arta hospital. According to some reports, the mother and both children were hospitalised, while the father awaited admission; the 3-year-old child lost consciousness twice. Other sources state that no serious injuries were recorded.
The cause of the accident is under investigation by the traffic police. Traffic on the section has been restored.
