Ireland: Toyota Yaris 'squashed like a concertina'
On 8 August 2024, on the N59 near Newport (West Mayo), a Toyota Yaris crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with a campervan driven by a tourist from Munich. Rear-seat passenger Lizzie Abraham Saju, 63, died. The campervan driver and his family sustained minor injuries. Coroner Dr Eleanor Fitzgerald described the car as 'squashed like a concertina'. The Yaris driver did not recall the collision; the case was referred to the DPP, which declined to prosecute.
Australia: Greyhound bus driver trial
In Townsville District Court, the trial of Greyhound bus driver Peter Jason Kief began. In June 2024, on the Bruce Highway at Gumlu (Queensland), the bus crossed into oncoming traffic and hit a caravan towed by Wayne and Penelope Killen. Three passengers died. The court heard Kief drove over 100 metres on the wrong side; witnesses heard him say 'I dozed off, it was a long night'. The defence argues he cannot be criminally liable for actions while asleep.
New Zealand: caravan vandalism
Police in Skibbereen are investigating criminal damage: three windows were smashed in a caravan where a mother and her 11-year-old daughter live. The owner uses wood and plastic to keep out rain, as she was not offered emergency housing.
Tasmania: destroyed caravan
On Tasmania's east coast, a caravan was completely destroyed after detaching from its towing vehicle on the bridge over the Cygnet River. Police urge drivers to check hitches and weight distribution.
