Closure of the campsite
Hwaseong City (Gyeonggi Province, South Korea) has decided to close the 43-pitch Hyangnam Auto Camping Site, opened in March 2018, and build a training field for Hwaseong FC in its place. Mayor Jeong Myeong-geun explained the need to provide the team with a training base: the city will host the National Sports Games in 2027, the Youth Games in 2028, and a sports festival for all in 2029. According to sources, without its own field, the club would have to conduct away training for three years with a budget of about 500 million won. 1.8 billion won has been allocated for the field.
Reaction and alternatives
The campsite received about 50,000 visitors annually (71,000 in 2023, 67,000 in 2024). In 2025, it was recognized as an exemplary site in the environmental category by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Tourism Organization. The decision has sparked protests: over 100 complaints, lack of preliminary hearings, and notification one month before closure. City authorities state the decision is final but are considering alternative campsites — Hwaseong Eco Farm Land with 106 pitches is already open, and Gunpyeong Osollo with 55 pitches will open next month.
