Residents of Sandy Point, Victoria, are set to challenge the South Gippsland Shire Council's decision to approve the development of the Sandy Point Caravan Park (also referred to as Sandy Point Holiday Park). The landowner, Prom Coast Developments Pty Ltd, received permission to build 11 permanent homes despite 29 objections.
The caravan park has been operating for over 60 years, providing affordable holiday accommodation for families. The Sandy Point Community Group has announced its intention to file an appeal with the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT). Opponents cite risks to local tourism, increased traffic, environmental strain, and climate change threats including coastal flooding. Residents fear the closure of the park will hurt local businesses and affordable recreation for low-income families.
