Volkswagen Camiones y Buses is taking part in Expo Rodantear for the first time. The stand shows a motorhome built by Culpina Expedition Truck on the chassis of the light Delivery 11.180 4x4 truck. Martín Simonpietri, product manager of the division, said demand for recreational use is growing fast.
Technical details and uses
On asphalt the truck can run in 4x2 mode, while off road it uses all-wheel drive with manual hub locking. The transfer box offers a 2 to 1 reduction, and combined with first gear and the final drive the total ratio reaches 60 to 1. The diesel engine delivers 600 Nm of torque at low revs. Simonpietri said that in August tests the truck climbed steep slopes by simply releasing the clutch in first gear with low range engaged, without accelerating.
The finished motorhome weighs about seven tonnes and is more than 8 metres long. The living module includes a kitchen, a bathroom and a terrace with solar panels. Beyond tourism, the chassis is used to transport mining staff, install power lines in rural areas, fight forest fires and deliver supplies. Volkswagen and Carrocerías Culpina have worked together since 2017, almost a year before the Delivery launched in 2018; the company also assembled the electric e-Delivery version.
