A new Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) restricts wild camping, fires, and barbecues at nine locations on the North Yorkshire coast to address anti-social behaviour and environmental damage. The order, approved on May 1, covers sites in Scarborough and Whitby, including areas near Whitby Abbey. Offenders face a fixed penalty of up to £100 or a court fine of up to £1,000. North Yorkshire Council reported that cleanup and repairs from unauthorized camping between May and October 2024 cost over £30,000.
