North Yorkshire Council has introduced a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) at nine coastal locations, including Scarborough and Whitby. The order, approved on 1 May 2026, prohibits wild camping, campfires and barbecues. The measure aims to tackle anti-social behaviour and environmental damage.
Offenders face a fine of up to £100 or, in some cases, up to £1,000 if the case goes to court. According to the council, cleaning and restoration after illegal camping between May and October 2024 cost £30,000.
