Alghero faces surge in uncontrolled camper van parking

In Alghero, Sardinia, the issue of uncontrolled motorhome parking has escalated. Lorenzo Carboni, a local campsite representative, stated that the situation requires immediate action. Up to 15 motorhomes were parked at his campsite entrance, forcing police intervention. Carboni proposes a landing tax or a 'camper passport' system, as used in Corsica, requiring proof of waste disposal at authorized sites.

The uncontrolled parking of motorhomes in Alghero has escalated. Local campsite operators report numerous cases of illegal overnight parking, with up to 15 motorhomes gathering at campsite entrances during summer. Proposed solutions include a landing tax or a 'motorhome passport' system, as used in Corsica, requiring proof of waste disposal at authorized sites.

Councillor Emiliano Piras of NrA stated that Sardinia's Regional Landscape Plan prohibits motorhome parking areas within 300 meters of the sea, preventing their placement in urban zones. The municipality cannot ban motorhome parking without offering equipped alternatives. Piras proposed mandatory waste water declaration forms and a landing tax to fund public facilities.

Alghero city councilor Cesare Emiliano Piras commented on the recurring issue of camper parking in the port and city. He noted that the Highway Code equates campers (motorhomes) with cars for parking purposes but prohibits camping in any parking area. According to Piras, Sardinia's Regional Landscape Plan bans the construction of camper service areas within 300 meters of the coast, preventing strategic placement in urban zones. He proposed mandatory reporting of grey and black water discharge points and a dedicated landing tax, with proceeds reinvested into public camper parking facilities.
