How to read the plate
A Turkish plate starts with a two-digit province (il) code from 01 to 81, followed by 1–3 letters and 2–5 digits (34 ABC 123). Codes 01–67 follow the alphabetical order of province names in the 1960s (01 Adana, 67 Zonguldak); provinces created later got 68–81. The letter group has a meaning too: in districts (ilçe) it points to the tax office, while in the provincial centre letters simply follow the order of issue. On the left is a blue band with the letters TR.

History
Numeric province codes were introduced in 1962; before that plates had no province code. Codes 01–67 have not changed since, only new ones were added: 68–71 in 1989, 72–73 in 1990, 74–79 in 1991–1995, 80 in 1996 and 81 (Düzce) in 1999. Some provinces were renamed but kept their code: 46 Maraş became Kahramanmaraş (1973), 63 Urfa became Şanlıurfa (1984), 33 İçel became Mersin (2002). The current look with the blue band dates from 2004/2016.
