How to read the plate
A Georgian plate reads: two Latin letters, three digits and two more letters separated by dashes (AB-123-CD), with a blue strip on the left bearing the flag and GE. There is no region code: the letters and digits are a series, and a combination can be chosen for a fee.

History
The current format dates from 1 September 2014. On 1993–2004 plates (three letters and three digits) the first letter originally showed the registration office: A Tbilisi, B Adjara, C Abkhazia, D Kutaisi and so on; since 2004 the letters have had no link to a place. Before 1993 Soviet series were used. Abkhazia and South Ossetia issue their own plates, which have been banned in Georgia since 2004.
