How to read the plate
The new Syrian plate reads: a two-digit code, a middle block with the word سورية, the flag and SYR, then a number of up to five digits on the right. The first two digits are the vehicle category, not a region: 12, 13 and 14 are private cars, 61, 62 and 65 private trucks, 81 public transport. New plates carry no governorate name. The region appeared on the old 1997-series plates, where the governorate was written as a word in Arabic.

History
From 1997 to 2024 plates carried the name of one of 14 governorates. New plates were first issued in October 2024 in Damascus and Rif Dimashq, then in Latakia and other governorates; since 2025 they bear the new flag. The changeover is planned to take about three years. During the war, authorities in areas outside Damascus's control issued their own plates.
