How to read the plate
An Azerbaijani plate reads left to right: a white field with the flag and AZ on the left, then the two-digit district code, two Latin letters and three digits separated by hyphens — for example 09-BR-763. The code at the start shows the district or city: 10, 77, 88 and 90 are Baku, 20 is Ganja, 50 is Sumgait, 85 is the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.

History
The district–letters–digits format has been in use since 1993; in 2011 the design and blanks were updated, with an RFID tag. In 1991–1993 the number also began with the district code, and before 1991 cars carried Soviet republican series. Codes of the Karabakh districts were issued only in small numbers until 2020–2023.
