How to read the plate
On the left of an Iranian plate is a blue strip with the flag and I.R. IRAN, followed by two digits, a Persian letter and three digits — all characters are Persian (۱۲ ب ۳۴۵). A separate box on the right holds the two-digit code of the province (ostan) under the word ایران, for example ۱۱ for Tehran. Each ostan has between one and fifteen codes, and on private cars the series letter within a code points to the shahrestan (county).

History
Today's plates appeared in 2003–2005, with the European 520×110 mm size since 2005. Before that the plate spelled out the city or ostan (e.g. تهران) followed by five or six digits. The free trade zones (Kish, Qeshm, Chabahar, Aras, Anzali, Arvand, Maku) issue their own US-size plates with the zone logo.
