How to read the plate
A Greek plate is three letters and four digits joined by a hyphen (ΚΝΚ-6949). Only Greek letters that look like Latin ones are used: Α Β Ε Ζ Η Ι Κ Μ Ν Ο Ρ Τ Υ Χ. The first two letters give the transport office of a former prefecture (nomos), and each prefecture has from one to more than forty pairs: ΚΝ, for example, is Pieria (Katerini). In Attica and Thessaloniki the first letter is what matters (Υ, Ζ, Ι, Ο, Χ, Β for Attica, Ν for Thessaloniki), though even there the pairs are split between Athens, Piraeus, West and East Attica. Above the hyphen is a round state seal.

History
The current three-letter format dates from 1984, the EU format with the blue band from 2004. In 1972–1984 a plate had two letters and four digits, and the pairs were allocated to prefectures differently (e.g. Thessaloniki ΜΑ…ΝΕ, Attica ΒΑ…ΟΧ). In 1956–1972 plates were all-numeric with an area letter on top (Α for Athens, Θ for Thessaloniki, Π for Patras); replacing them was not mandatory, and they can still be seen on old cars.
