How to read the plate
A private car plate in Taiwan has three letters, a dash and four digits (BFG-9000). The letters I and O are not used, and neither is the digit 4. There is no region on the plate: numbering is shared across all of Taiwan and each combination exists only once, although plates are issued by different offices. Taxis, trucks and electric cars have plates in other colours.

History
Until 1984 the region was shown by digits (15 for Taiwan Province, 14 for Fujian Province, 70 for Taipei), later by the name of the issuing office. In 1992–2006 the jurisdiction name was printed above the number: Taipei, Kaohsiung, Taiwan Province, Kinmen or Lienchiang. Since 2007 there is no inscription, and in 2012–2014 seven-character plates without the digit 4 were introduced.
