How to read the plate
A Bhutanese private car plate is red with white characters. The top line reads «སྒེར་འཁོར» (“private vehicle”) in Dzongkha, the bottom one carries a number such as BP-2-A7662: BP for a private vehicle (BT taxi, BG government), then the region digit, a series letter and four digits. There are four region digits: 1 west, 2 centre, 3 south, 4 east of the country.

Earlier plates looked like BP-2-1234, without a series letter; the sources do not say when the letter was added. How the region digits map onto the dzongkhags has not been officially published.
