How to read the plate
An Afghan plate shows the region twice: on the left the province name in Dari or Pashto, with its three-letter Latin code below (KBL Kabul, HRT Herat). Next comes the class digit between two bars, then a number of up to five digits — in Arabic numerals on top and Latin ones below. On the right is the vehicle type: ش / PRV for private. In Kabul the Persian number can have six digits.

History
The current system dates from 2004; the previous plates were issued from 1970. Since January 2026 Herat has issued plates with only digits and a category, without the province, for cross-border taxis, buses and lorries.
