How to read the plate
A Bangladeshi plate is written in Bengali on two lines. The top line gives the district (zila) — or, for big cities, the city plus মেট্রো (metro) — and, after a hyphen, the vehicle class letter: ঢাকা মেট্রো-গ is Dhaka Metro, class “ga”. The bottom line has two digits and the four-digit number: ৩১-৯৯৫৭. The region is simply the first word on the plate.

History
The “district – class – number” format predates today's plates: since 2012 BRTA has issued retro-reflective digital-pattern plates. Earlier plates were often hand-painted, and private cars had white characters on black.
