How to read the plate
A private car plate in Brunei has white characters on black: a first letter, one or two more series letters and 1–4 digits (KN 232, BAA 1234). Today the plate does not show a region: three-letter series are national, and since 2006 the letter K is given regardless of where the car is registered. Taxis and buses have a green background, government cars the BG and BZ series, diplomats DC.

History
Until 2006 the first letter showed the transport department office: B for Brunei-Muara District, K for Belait (Kuala Belait). The letters T (Tutong) and U (Temburong) appear in descriptions but are not confirmed by reliable sources. Three-letter series such as BAA have been issued since 2009.
