Long-term travel in a motorhome is possible on a limited budget. The authors, who spent several years travelling in their expedition vehicle Charly, share saving strategies: refuelling in the country with cheaper diesel before crossing a border (a 15-cent per litre difference with a 300-litre tank saves 45 euros), avoiding motorway service stations, buying local food at markets and roadside stalls, using the vehicle's shower or paying for campsite facilities, and finding free or low-cost water supply points. In Albania, a large bowl of olives cost just over one euro. In Western Sahara, refilling water involved improvised hose connections and a pause for a camel herd to drink.
