Refrigerators in RVs can pose a fire hazard due to cooling unit failures. In 2001, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recalled Norcold gas/electric refrigerators over possible ammonia leaks. Dometicⓘ also recalled certain two-door absorption refrigerators from 1997–2006. Similar defects were identified in Norcold models from 2010–2011.
Absorption cooling systems operate by heating, and damaged tubing creates a risk of ammonia leakage. An alternative is 12-volt compressor refrigerators, which are more efficient and safer.
