In Montrose, Colorado, a motorhome driver mistook the access hatch of an underground diesel tank at a Maverik petrol station for a motorhome waste disposal point and emptied the vehicle's toilet into it. The incident occurred on 25 May 2026 during the Memorial Day weekend. The station shut off the pumps and drained the entire fuel volume, estimated at between 38,000 and 76,000 litres, before cleaning the tank. Drivers who refuelled just before the shutdown may face clogged filters and injectors. A similar case involving a petrol tank was reported in Canada in 2020.
