Renting a caravan for a trip abroad requires a well-maintained vehicle from a specialised rental company, the correct documents (category B driving licence for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes, registration certificate, insurance and possibly a rental contract) and knowledge of local parking and camping rules. Most caravans sleep 4–6 people, fuel consumption is 10–12 litres per 100 kilometres, and fully charged batteries with solar panels last 2–3 days. Wild camping is permitted in France and parts of Austria, but prohibited in Slovenia, Montenegro, Belgium and Italy outside designated areas. Popular destinations include the Dolomites, the Germany–France–Spain–Portugal route and the Croatian islands, which can be reached by ferry.
