Choosing a car for towing a caravan: what really matters

Road safety agencies and experts warn about typical beginner errors: misjudging size and weight, overloading, parking violations, and unrealistic distance planning

German platform Caravaning published a comparison between motorhomes and caravans. Decisive reasons for choosing a caravan include a lower entry price from around €15,000, more living space, and convenience for longer stays. A motorhome is considered unbeatable for frequent travel, while a caravan is more suitable for family holidays with extended stops.

An ACSI survey shows only 1.8% of Dutch caravan owners use an electric vehicle for towing. Key barriers are limited range (75% of respondents), high purchase price (44%), and inconvenient charging stations where detaching the trailer is often required.
