In Kumamoto, the first practical session on overnight car evacuation was held at the Kumamoto Keirin velodrome, designated as a car evacuation site for earthquakes. According to one source, about 70 people in 40 cars took part; according to another, about 100 people, including families with children, participated.
Participants spent the night in the parking lot, filled out questionnaires via QR codes, performed exercises to improve blood circulation, and were introduced to emergency equipment. They were also reminded to regularly move their legs to prevent economy-class syndrome (thrombosis).
The event was organized based on the experience of the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake, when many residents slept in cars due to fear of aftershocks. The velodrome will open for evacuation during earthquakes of magnitude 6 or higher.
