Italy's Codice della Strada does not ban carrying a dog in a motorhome, but Article 169 sets out how the animal must be placed. With a single animal, it may travel in the cabin without barriers provided it does not obstruct the driver; approved harnesses attached to the seat belts are recommended. With more than one animal, a carrier or cage is mandatory, or the dogs must be placed in a rear compartment separated from the driving position by a net or similar device. Permanent installation of separating elements requires authorisation from the competent office of the Department for Land Transport. Non-compliance carries an administrative fine of up to 344 euros and one penalty point on the driving licence. Before departure the dog must be microchipped, registered in the canine registry and have an up-to-date health booklet; for trips abroad an animal passport listing vaccinations is required, and entry rules vary by country.
