According to DGT instruction PROT 2026/04, camper vans over 10 years old must pass technical inspection every 6 months, like commercial vehicles. Reclassifying as a motorhome (category M) allows inspection every 2 years until 10 years old, and annually after that.
To reclassify, the vehicle must meet equipment requirements, including a fixed kitchen, table, sufficient interior height, and securely fastened electrical equipment. The procedure is carried out at the provincial traffic office, which issues a new registration certificate with changed classification N1. It also exempts owners from speed limits applicable to trucks.
