The Biscay coast sees a summer surge in motorhomes, caravans and camper vans from across Europe. Municipalities like Sopela, Barrika and Plentzia host dozens of travellers daily. The trend, intensified after the pandemic, has become a hallmark of the summer season. However, a lack of uniform regulation means overnight parking in a properly parked vehicle is not always legally defined as camping, leaving final decisions to local councils. Biscay has 19 designated motorhome areas, including Sopela (48-hour limit, no external items), Berango (free water, near metro) and Zamudio (water services). The Basque Country Camping Association calls for more dedicated sites with basic services and time limits to manage visitor flow and avoid unfair competition with campsites.
