Members of Gwynedd council in Wales have expressed concerns that the introduction of a visitor levy could lead to a rise in wild campers on beaches and scenic spots. The law, signed in September, allows local authorities to charge for overnight stays.
At a committee meeting, issues were raised regarding fee collection and control over campers, including uncontrolled parking and the council's lack of powers to evict them. The levy is estimated to raise between £2.4 million and £12 million. The need for improved infrastructure and clear allocation of funds for tourism development was also highlighted.
