Greece Reverses Restrictions: Motorhomes Allowed to Park Everywhere Again

Greek authorities are increasing inspections for illegal camping outside organized sites. Violators face an administrative fine of €300 per person, tent, or vehicle, and in serious cases, criminal proceedings with possible imprisonment of up to six months. This week, two men were arrested on Skiathos for camping on a beach, reigniting debate over whether Greece should adopt a regulated model for responsible free camping.

Since January 2025, a new law in Greece restricts parking of motorhomes and caravans in public spaces. Violations can result in fines up to 300 euros and up to three months imprisonment. Parking in residential areas is limited to 24 hours for vehicles longer than 7.5 meters.

Greece introduced new regulations distinguishing between overnight parking and active camping. Starting in 2026, campervans are allowed to park in public spaces like regular vehicles, provided they do not deploy awnings, tables, or outdoor gear. The government is also rolling out municipal 'Camper Stops' with waste disposal and water refill stations. This follows a strict May 2025 law that banned motorhome parking outside designated campsites, which faced backlash from travelers and tourism boards.

Chef Stavros Varthalitis launched the YouTube show The Roadtrippers, focusing on motorhome travel in Greece. In an interview, he recounted difficulties driving in the Taygetus mountains, where he had to reverse 1.5 km at night on a washed-out dirt road, and discussed his culinary preferences, including the Epirus region.

Chinese company Feixiang has unveiled the Shuxinge Series FX RV S800, a motorhome that automatically transforms into a two-story dwelling with 36 sqm of space. It features solar panels and lithium batteries.

The Greek police headquarters issued a regulation in February 2026 clarifying when a motorhome is parked versus illegally camping. This addresses uncertainty since 2025 rule tightening, when tourists were turned away from legal spots. Violators face fines up to €3,000 or imprisonment.
