Greece tightens crackdown on illegal motorhome conversions into buildings

On the Greek island of Zakynthos, architecture firm Kasawoo has built a compact house of 16 sq m (2×8 m) without a concrete foundation. The structure is based on the dimensions of a caravan and is intended for family holidays. The house was manufactured in Romania, transported by truck and ferry, then by tractor to the site. Inside are two bedrooms, a kitchen, and a bathroom, with no air conditioning but natural ventilation through barn doors. The facade is painted in a traditional blood-red color for the island. The project is an alternative to mass villa construction, which, according to the architects, exacerbates water shortages on the island.

Cristian Caloeanu, lead singer of the Romanian band 'Haiducii lui 7 Cai', traveled with his wife and four-month-old daughter to the Greek island of Thassos in a caravan. The family stayed at a closed-circuit campsite with a private beach. The journey took seven hours. According to Caloeanu, the baby handled the trip well, and the vacation on the Greek coast was cheaper than on the Romanian coast.

Greek authorities have begun issuing fines for placing tents, campervans, and caravans on beaches and other restricted areas. Fines range from €300 to €3,000. Wild camping is banned outside licensed campsites, including overnight parking on public lots. Coast guard and police are conducting inspections.

Skydream has introduced a caravan approximately 8 meters long, equipped with two 85 kWh lithium batteries and rooftop solar panels. The model is in pre-production; price and launch date are yet to be announced. It includes driver assistance for hill starts, hitching, and parking, plus automatic leveling. The interior features a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, dining area, and a living room with a 60-inch screen.

The Association of Motorhome and Caravan Professionals of Greece (SEARTEE) welcomed a new clarifying police order that specifies parking rules under the new Road Traffic Code (Law 5209/2025).

Starting July 28 on NPO 1, the seventh season of the show features host Marlijn Weerdenburg accompanying 42 participants on a trip through mainland Greece and the Peloponnese peninsula. The route begins in Croatia, passing through Serbia and North Macedonia. Participants include Adri, traveling in a self-built camper van, and Flemish couple Marc and Marina, who rented out their home after retirement and have been living in a caravan for five years.
