Spanish Ford-based motorhome challenges Volkswagen California

The Parliament of Cantabria approved a motion requiring the regional government to establish mechanisms to prevent indiscriminate overnight parking of motorhomes outside designated areas. The initiative, proposed by the PRC party, was backed by PSOE, Vox, and an independent deputy, while the ruling PP voted against. The text includes intensifying inspections of unregulated parking areas, creating a map of sensitive zones with specific limitations during high tourist season, and revising the current decree to incorporate environmental protection measures.

Francisco Ondarza, director of Caracol Camper, stated that the main problem for camper van users is the lack of clear regulations and designated parking and overnight areas. On the Canary Islands, conditions vary: La Gomera and El Hierro are welcoming, while Tenerife imposes restrictions. Ondarza noted that the rise in camper van popularity is linked to rising housing costs, with many using them as permanent residences.

The Ibiza City Council reported that most caravan owners in the illegal Sa Joveria settlement are leaving the site voluntarily. According to the administration, many rent caravans for €400–500 per month, and owners have begun removing them to avoid fines. Unattended vehicles will be classified as waste and removed.
