In Brief

Former SNP chief executive Peter Murrell admitted stealing over £400,000 from party funds. Part of the money was used to buy a luxury Niesmann & Bischoff motorhome, which may now be sold at a police auction.

Former Scottish National Party (SNP) chief executive Peter Murrell has admitted stealing more than £400,000 from party funds over 12 years. Part of this money was used to purchase a luxury Niesmann & Bischoff Smove 7.4e motorhome.

Purchase and seizure details

According to sources, Murrell paid £112,050 for the campervan on December 7, 2020 — the day before he appeared before a parliamentary committee investigating actions regarding Alex Salmond. The total cost of the motorhome was £124,550. When seized in April 2023, the odometer showed just 4 miles. The vehicle was insured for personal use only and bore no SNP branding.

In addition to the motorhome, stolen funds were used to buy a Volkswagen Golf and a Jaguar i-Pace. Fake invoices were used to conceal the purchases.

Future of the motorhome

Police Scotland may auction the motorhome through Wilsons Auctions after legal proceedings conclude. Murrell's sentencing is expected on June 23. Allies of Salmond and the opposition are calling for an independent inquiry, citing possible collusion.

Council to increase caravan fees

BCP Council will raise licence fees for owners of caravan sites in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole from 1 October. The increase applies to 21 residential sites, grouped into five bands based on the number of mobile homes. For the smallest sites (up to 10 homes), annual charges rise from £192 to £200; for the largest (up to 142 homes), from £383 to £398. Fees for licence transfers and operator assessments will also increase. The council noted there is little regulation to prevent costs being passed on to residents.
