In Brief

Former SNP chief executive Peter Murrell has pleaded guilty to embezzling more than £400,000 from party funds. The money was used to buy a Niesmann+Bischoff motorhome that was driven just four miles and sat unused for over two years.

Former Scottish National Party (SNP) chief executive Peter Murrell has pleaded guilty to embezzling £400,310.65 from the party's main bank account between 2010 and 2022. The Edinburgh High Court heard the funds came from membership fees and donations.

Items bought with embezzled funds

  • Niesmann+Bischoff Smove 7.4e motorhome costing £124,550, purchased in October 2020. When seized by police, the odometer showed just four miles. The vehicle sat unused at Murrell's mother's home for over two years and was never used for election campaigning.
  • Two cars: a Jaguar I-Pace and a Volkswagen Golf.
  • A robotic lawnmower for £3,070.
  • Luxury items: Bremont watches, Montblanc pens, Le Creuset cookware, Molton Brown cosmetics, a silver wine coaster for £3,500, designer salt and pepper shakers for £2,618, and four coffee machines.

Murrell disguised the spending by recording it as "legal services" or "management expenses" and used fake invoices. The motorhome purchase was listed as "stage transport," but no campaign materials were found inside. Sentencing is expected on 23 June.

Council to increase caravan fees

BCP Council will raise licence fees for owners of caravan sites in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole from 1 October. The increase applies to 21 residential sites, grouped into five bands based on the number of mobile homes. For the smallest sites (up to 10 homes), annual charges rise from £192 to £200; for the largest (up to 142 homes), from £383 to £398. Fees for licence transfers and operator assessments will also increase. The council noted there is little regulation to prevent costs being passed on to residents.
