Since May 31, 2026, a series of illegal occupations of public facilities by traveling caravans has been recorded across France. In Vaucluse, about 300 caravans occupied the Cavaillon racetrack and two training fields in Châteauneuf-de-Gadagne. Local football clubs, including ARC Cavaillon and Phénix Club, canceled all training, matches and events until June 14. Municipalities have filed complaints; authorities are seeking alternative sites, but infrastructure is overloaded.
In the Rhône department, about 240 vehicles from the evangelical mission "Vie et Lumière" occupied the Raymond Durand municipal park in Chaponnay. Mayor Nicolas Varigni called it an illegal occupation; police issued between 200 and 300 fines. The mission claims it notified authorities in advance, but the Rhône prefecture stated it was not informed. The law requires travelers to stay only on designated sites, which are insufficient in the region — the mayor and department acknowledge the need for a fifth site.
In Castanet-Tolosan (southeast of Toulouse), about a hundred caravans occupied the Fontanelle park. The town hall did not expect their arrival, as the group planned to stop elsewhere. After negotiations involving the prefecture, an agreement was reached for departure on June 7. The mayor noted the group maintains order and uses safe connections.
In Côte-d'Or, about a hundred caravans occupied the Beaune airfield on the morning of June 1, completely halting flights. Business owners on site estimate losses at over €5,000. A community representative stated they could not find a suitable site and called the stay temporary — until June 8.
