In Brief

Multiple illegal encampments of travelers' caravans have been reported in several French departments. Stadiums, a racetrack, and an airfield have been occupied, causing event cancellations and financial losses. Mayors demand eviction.

In early June 2026, several regions of France saw mass illegal installations of caravans by travelers (gens du voyage).

Vaucluse: Châteauneuf-de-Gadagne and Cavaillon

Hundreds of trailers were set up illegally in the communes of Châteauneuf-de-Gadagne and Cavaillon. About a hundred caravans occupied the Cavaillon racetrack, prompting the mayor to file a complaint. In Châteauneuf-de-Gadagne, between 200 and 300 caravans have been on two football fields of SC Gadagne since Monday, leading to the cancellation of sports events and the relocation of training sessions.

Côte-d'Or: Beaune airfield

Around a hundred caravans occupied the Beaune airfield from June 1 for a week, completely paralyzing the activity of businesses located there. The head of Air Services 21 estimated losses at over 5,000 euros. A community representative stated they had no choice due to the lack of designated sites and called for the creation of a parking area. Local authorities are studying the possibility of building a site for 80–100 vehicles but note this is insufficient for groups of this size.

Aude: Carcassonne

On May 31, 2026, several hundred caravans illegally settled on the Mayrevieille plain in Carcassonne, occupying one of two stadiums. Municipal police twice asked them to leave but were unsuccessful. The mayor appealed to the prefect of the Aude department to evict the occupants. The caravans are expected to remain until June 7.
