In late May and early June 2026, France saw a wave of illegal caravan encampments. In Vaucluse, about 200 caravans (around 500 people) took over a football stadium in Châteauneuf-de-Gadagne, while hundreds of trailers settled on the Cavaillon racecourse and two SC Gadagne stadiums. The mayor of Cavaillon filed a complaint. Severe thunderstorms on June 2 could cause significant damage to the pitch.
In Carcassonne (Aude), several hundred travellers occupied the Mayrevieille plain, including one of the two stadiums; municipal police twice asked them to leave, and the mayor appealed to the prefect. In Beaune (Côte-d’Or), about a hundred caravans occupied the airfield, halting all activity; losses at Air Services 21 are estimated at over 5000 euros. A community representative said they had no choice due to a lack of designated sites. Authorities are considering a site for 80–100 vehicles but say it is insufficient.
In Tulle (Corrèze), 13 caravans of an evangelical community illegally settled in the Chambon district; eviction proceedings have begun. The caravans in Carcassonne are expected to remain until June 7.
