Camper and Caravan Fires in the Netherlands
Over the past six months, a series of fires have completely destroyed campers and caravans across the Netherlands. The incidents occurred in various locations and campsites.
Timeline of Events
- Veenendaal (June 17, 2026): Around 4:30 AM, a parked Volkswagen camper was completely destroyed. Flames spread to neighboring garage boxes, damaging doors and roofs. Surveillance cameras indicate spontaneous combustion; arson has been ruled out.
- Melderslo (June 14, 2026): Around midnight, a caravan on a campsite at Nachtegaallaan was fully engulfed. No injuries were reported; police are investigating.
- Herpen (April 23, 2026): Around 8:00 PM, a caravan at Camping Herperduin (Schaijkseweg) burned completely. A black smoke column was visible for kilometers. The fire spread to a tree and roadside. Two gas cylinders were removed before the fire. Cause unknown; no injuries.
- Egmond aan Zee (June 8, 2026): A devastating fire destroyed the Simons family's beach house. Neighbors organized a fundraiser and donated a caravan to help.
- Arnhem (December 7, 2025): In the evening, a caravan on a parking lot was completely destroyed. Police are investigating, not ruling out arson.
In all cases, firefighters arrived promptly but could not save the vehicles. No injuries were reported, only property damage.
