On Saturday afternoon, a motorhome burned to the ground on Fortdijk in Koewacht. Firefighters arrived around 12:55, but the vehicle could not be saved due to the rapid spread of the fire and explosions of gas cylinders. Passengers were warned in time by a passerby who noticed the fire in the rearview mirror. Debris was scattered across a neighboring field.
The fire also spread to dry grass near the dike, raising the alarm level to medium. Due to a lack of water, a tanker truck was called in. The motorhome is beyond repair; firefighters focused on extinguishing the roadside and dike. The dike fire was contained, and damping down is underway. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
