Nearly 1,200 people were evacuated from a campsite near a beach in the Pas-de-Calais department in northern France after two wildfires broke out, local authorities said. One fire was contained, but the other was not yet stabilized due to difficult access and the flames spreading south. The evacuees were moved to safety. France and other European countries face an unusually intense wildfire season, attributed to a wet winter that boosted vegetation growth, which dried out during summer heatwaves. Environment Minister Monique Barbu said heatwaves could cost nearly 15 billion euros.
