A fire broke out around 12:45 on Wednesday at a parking area of the Son Hugo sports centre in Palma de Mallorca, starting in one motorhome and spreading to adjacent vehicles. At least three caravans burned out completely and another was damaged by flames and smoke. The National Police are investigating whether the fire was set deliberately, after witnesses reported that several people not belonging to the resident community ran away shortly before it started. Three people received medical treatment: a man for mild smoke inhalation, two women for panic attacks, and one resident for a burned hand and smoke inhalation. The settlement houses between 150 and 200 people, many of whom cannot afford alternative housing; at least one family with minor children and a several-month-old baby lost its home, and local police have involved Palma's social services to arrange temporary accommodation. The cause and full extent of the damage are still under investigation.
