In Brief

The UK introduces paid overnight parking for motorhomes and campervans: £10 per night in Portsmouth and Pembrokeshire, while North Yorkshire imposes £70 fines for violating overnight parking bans

Overnight parking rules for motorhomes and campervans are tightening across the UK. From May 13, the Port Solent car park in Portsmouth introduced a £10 per night charge for such vehicles, citing an increase in numbers causing issues for other visitors. Payment is via the RingGo app or advance booking through JustPark. Car parking remains free overnight.

Pilot scheme in Pembrokeshire

Pembrokeshire County Council launched a two-year pilot overnight parking scheme for motorhomes and campervans at Goodwick Moor car park near Fishguard port. The cost is £10 per night, with a maximum stay of one night. Setting up furniture or awnings outside is prohibited. Initially covering four car parks, the scheme was reduced to one after protests.

Fines and towing in North Yorkshire

North Yorkshire introduced a trial overnight parking ban from 23:00 to 7:00 at three coastal sites for up to 18 months. Violators face £70 fines and vehicle towing. Local authorities CAN restrict parking on specific streets, verges, or beaches, even if the vehicle is self-contained.

Motorhome and campervan parking ban in England could be made permanent

A ban on overnight parking for motorhomes and campervans in coastal areas of North Yorkshire could be made permanent. The council will discuss the issue on March 3, despite over 3,000 objections in a consultation, two-thirds of which came from owners of such vehicles. Authorities cite an unacceptable level of vehicles restricting parking for other visitors and fire safety concerns.

South Cambridgeshire District Council has obtained a year-long extension from the High Court to an injunction under Section 187B of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 against unauthorised development on land west of Moor Drove, Histon. The interim injunction was initially granted on 24 May after reports of unauthorised activity. At the time of service, five caravans were on site; there are now 17. The court ordered that all but the initial five caravans must be removed.

Scotland fan travels in 1977 motorhome with football graphics

John McIntosh from Falkirk bought a 1977 Airstream Argosy motorhome decorated with images of Scottish footballers, including Archie Gemmill, Graeme Souness, and Scott McTominay. Instead of traveling to the World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico, he decided to tour Scotland to meet former colleagues and fans. McIntosh cited a lack of understanding of soccer in the US as the reason for not attending the tournament.

Traveller camp on former car boot site doubles in size

A traveller encampment on the former Ketch Car Boot site in Worcester has doubled in size after additional caravans arrived on June 8. The site now holds around 12 caravans and 14 vehicles, including trucks and cars. Residents have reported noise from generators and quad bikes.
