Experienced caravanners Leonie and Harry Reints warn that a growing number of retirees are taking up caravanning without prior towing experience. Federal tourism data shows more than 17 million domestic trips were taken in 2025, and mishaps involving inexperienced caravanners are rising. The couple advises learning to tow and reverse safely, keeping the caravan within legal weight limits to avoid accidents and invalidated insurance, and checking tyre pressure, lights, brakes and safety chains before departure. They also recommend noting the caravan's length and weight, including the draw bar and rear additions, to avoid parking problems at destinations.
