In Japan, overnight stays in vehicles are gaining ground as inflation pushes travellers to cut accommodation costs. A survey by Honda Access conducted in September 2026 and published on 20 October found that 55.0% of respondents with experience of such trips intend to continue them, and 56.2% would use paid overnight parking at convenience stores. The Leisure White Paper 2026 (preliminary edition, published on 16 July 2026) reported that in 2025 both the leisure-time and leisure-spending comfort indices turned negative, while 66.3% of respondents said they value leisure over work. Participants spend an average of 26,000 yen on leisure.
