A 51-year-old author spent his first night in a camper van at Oodarumi Pass (about 2,360 m) before climbing Mount Kinpu (2,599 m). The pass parking lot is free and holds about 30 vehicles; at midnight 4 spaces were taken, by 5:00 about 80% were occupied, and after 5:30 it was nearly full. Overnight in late July required a sleeping bag, socks and a fleece. The 8.2 km out-and-back route with 558 m of ascent and descent took 6 hours 35 minutes including 55 minutes of rest, against a standard time of 3 hours 56 minutes. After descending, the author visited Hayabusa Onsen in Yamanashi: 700 yen for a two-hour visit, open 10:00–21:00, closed Tuesdays.
